Nelli will get adequate quantity of drinking water

The Local Administration Minister, M.K. Stalin, at a function at Vasudevanallur on Tuesday.Tirunelveli district would soon attain self-sufficiency in getting adequate quantity of protected drinking water as the State Government was according highest priority for implementing integrated drinking water schemes, the Local Administration Minister, M.K. Stalin, has said.

He was addressing a meeting at Vasudevanallur about 75 km from here on the Tenkasi - Madurai Highway on Tuesday. He laid the foundation stone for Vasudevanallur Combined Drinking Water Scheme to be executed by Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drinking Water Board at a cost of Rs. 43.32 crore.The scheme, to be completed within 14 months, would benefit 2. 64 lakh people living in Vasudevanallur, Royagiri, Sivagiri, Alangulam town panchayats, 78 wayside habitations of Vasudevanallur and Pappakudi panchayat unions, 41 wayside habitats of Srivilliputhur municipality and Rajapalayam panchayat union in Virudhunagar district.Since the population of these areas were expected to touch 2.97 lakh and 3.35 lakh in 2021 and 2036 respectively, the project had been designed in an extensive manner.


A total of 12 filtration wells would be dug at the Tamirabarani near Mukkoodal from where water would be drawn and sent to Kasinathapuram, Kalingapatti, Sernthamangalam and Royagiri. A total of 11 new overhead tanks would be constructed in addition to the existing 62 and pipes to the total length of 135.55 km would be laid, Mr. Stalin said."When the project is commissioned, every individual in village panchayats will get 40 litres of protected drinking water a day.


A consumer in town panchayat will get 70 litres," Mr. Stalin said.The Achchanputhur - Aayikudi Combined Drinking Water Scheme, being executed on an outlay of Rs. 30 crore, would get Rs. 5 crore more to include more villages as beneficiaries.Mr. Stalin told the Vasudevanallur town panchayat to forward proposals to his department for executing solid waste management programme and for installing generators in the new drinking water programme.


The Speaker, R. Avudaiyappan, presided over the meeting. Ministers T.P.M. Maideen Khan and Poongothai Aladi Aruna, MP M. Appadurai, MLAs V. Karuppasamy Pandian, M. Appavu, N. Maalairaja, P. Veldurai, S. Peter Alphonse, Collector G. Prakash and chairman of district panchayat M. Graham Bell spoke.
