Vijayakant handed over portion of the land to NHAI
Actor-politician A. Vijayakant on Monday handed over a portion of the land and marriage hall building at Koyambedu to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).A top NHAI officer said demolition of the hall would begin on Wednesday and would be completed in two-three days thereafter.A formal letter, signed by the actor, his wife and five other shareholders of the Shri Andal Azhalagar Kalyana Mandapam Private Limited, was sent to the project implementation unit of the NHAI on Monday. The letter, dated May 14 letter read: "We do hereby handover the possession of land, referred in a letter sent by the competent authority, and the superstructures thereon today without prejudice to our right to claim sufficient compensation or alternative allotment of land... Take possession and acknowledge."On March 26, the Supreme Court declined to interfere with the Madras High Court order dismissing his writ appeal against taking possession of the land and building. As the apex court had given liberty to the actor to approach the High Court for extension of time to hand over the assets to the NHAI, they again moved the High Court for appropriate orders. However, the High Court granted them time up to May 15 only after all the parties concerned gave a written undertaking, stating that they would surrender peaceful possession of the assets on May 15. The actor wrote to the NHAI on Monday, asking it to take possession of the land.
