1.5 Cr for modernising of Co-optex showrooms
Vellore:Cooptex showrooms in all district headquarters will be modernised this year at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore, according to N.K.K.P. Raja, Minister for Handlooms and Textile Industries.Talking to newspersons after inaugurating the modernised Cooptex showroom in the Sarathi Mansions here on Wednesday, Mr. Raja said that in the first phase, five showrooms were taken up for modernisation. The showroom in Vellore was the third to be modernised at a cost of Rs.12.5 lakh, next to the showrooms in Chennai and Madurai.The modernisation measures followed the decision of the Chief Minister to accept the demand from the legislators in order to increase the sale of handloom goods in the light of growing competition from the private sector.While handloom goods worth Rs.2.21 crore were sold in the Cooptex showrooms in Vellore district last year, a sale target of Rs.3 crore had been fixed for this year.Quality textile products in 2,500 designs had been introduced in the Cooptex showrooms. Vellore Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav presided. M.B. Nirmala, Managing Director of Cooptex, C. Gnanasekharan, Vellore MLA, G. Latha, Gudiyatham MLA, and R. Sheela Rajan, district panchayat chairperson also participated.
