Ambattur Municipality is likely to get more space to compost solid waste: a 40-acre site may be earmarked at Kuthambakkam near Poonamallee. The local bodies of Tiruverkadu, Valasaravakkam and Maduravoyal will share the yard. On instructions from the Tiruvallur Collectorate, officials from the Ambattur Municipality inspected the site this week.
A municipal official said the new yard was expected to ease the problem of garbage disposal in Ambattur, with a population of about 4 lakh. The civic body, which manages about 200 tonnes of garbage a day, needs about 40 acres of land for source segregation and composting. Now it uses the Athipattu yard, spread over 7.5 acres.A 10-acre site at Sekkadu is also being prepared, the official said. The Sekkadu site needs a compound wall and interior roads. The Athipattu yard will eventually be used as a transfer point.A compound wall will be built around it to lessen the health hazards faced by residents.
