State records 98.23% in Standard X CBSE examination

Chennai:Students rejoice at their success in the Standard X CBSE examination in Chennai on Monday. Tamil Nadu schools have put up an impressive performance in this year's CBSE Class X examination, the results of which were declared on Monday.The Chennai region and Ajmer regions were the first to declare results among the six CBSE zones in the country. The results of four more regions will be out on Tuesday.Out of 13,492 students, who appeared for the March examination, 13,253 students notched success: an overwhelming 98.23 per cent.

"The State's performance has been very encouraging and it has emerged as one of the highest performing states in the country," M.V.V Prasada Rao, Joint Secretary, CBSE Chennai region, said announcing the results.The CBSE will not release the list of toppers — either of schools or students — this time, as it did not want to discourage other students who had performed equally well but had lost out only by a couple of marks, Mr. Rao said, adding that the CBSE had nothing to do with any claim made by schools in this regard. The Chennai region consists of four southern states, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Goa, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

The overall pass percentage in the region is 93.47, against 89.43 last year. Pass percentage among boys was 93.2, while among girls, it was 93.60.Navodaya schools in the region posted a pass percentage of 99.23, while independent schools showed 98.47; Kendriya Vidyalaya schools recorded 98.2, while government schools put up 46.47 pass percentage.

The high scores in this year's examination were due to the new "stress-free examination system," introduced from this year, according to Mr. Rao.While marks in Mathematics were divided into 80 for the written examination and 20 for practical examination, science marks were divided into 60 for written examination and 20 each for school-based performance and external examinations.Marksheets have already been despatched to schools in other States, while Tamil Nadu schools will start receiving them from Tuesday.
