76 teachers arrested in Sivaganga

Sivaganga:The police on Saturday arrested 76 teachers, including 13 women, for allegedly disturbing the counselling session for secondary grade teachers’ transfer.A group of teachers, who reached the venue of counselling at Maruthupandiar Nagar Higher Secondary School here, demanded that the authorities announce all vacancies before commencing the counselling. The counselling could not start as scheduled as the teachers began shouting for transparency in the process. However, another group of teachers demanded that the counselling session start immediately.As tension mounted, the police lathi-charged the protestors. The counselling could be conducted only in the evening. In Ramanathapuram, nearly 1,000 teachers belonging to the Tamil Nadu Primary Teachers’ Association (Eswaran group) laid seige to the venue of the counselling, demanding transparency. The counselling was cancelled.
