`Varumun Kappom Thittam' launched
About 1,700 people were screened for various diseases at the launch of the State Government's preventive healthcare scheme `Varumun Kappom Thittam' in Ambattur on Friday.Thirty doctors, including dental, eye, ENT and heart specialists, from government and private hospitals screened the participants at the camp. Around 320 beneficiaries were referred to government hospitals such as Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital and Government Stanley Hospital for further treatment.Speaking at the programme Villivakkam MLA B. Ranganathan highlighted several civic projects under way in the area. Initiatives to identify a site to locate a multi-speciality hospital would begin shortly. The detailed project report for a comprehensive water supply and sewerage scheme would also be prepared in the first week of June. The total cost of the project was Rs.198 crore. A sum of Rs.250 crore has been allocated for various projects. For the proposed bus terminus in Ambattur, several sites, including those at Oragadam and Menambedu, were being evaluated. Ambattur Municipality chairman K.N. Sekar underscored the need for public awareness about the healthcare initiatives of the civic body.Municipal commissioner V. Chakrapani said six more health camps, to cover four lakh residents, were to be organised.
