Garbage removal begins in 21 wards in Salem

Salem:Workers of a private firm using modern machinery and vehicles for garbage collection and transportation in Salem. The removal of garbage and cleaning of drainage channels in 21 wards, where the Salem Corporation privatised the sanitary works recently, have begun in full swing. The private firm, which bagged the contract, deployed seven lorries, 23 auto tippers, three compactors and other modern machinery to collect and transport the waste from the wards.Officials said that the Corporation would shortly implement the door-to-door waste collection and segregation of garbage at source through the firm in the 21 wards.

The usage of modern machinery and vehicles would ensure waste collection on a regular basis, the officials added. When the Corporation undertook the conservancy works, it could not ensure collection of garbage on a regular basis. As a result, mounds of garbage remained uncleared for days together. The Corporation would also implement the waste collection at doorsteps in the remaining 31 wards.“We are going to re-deploy the conservancy workers, who worked in the 21 wards, to other parts shortly for this purpose,” Corporation Commissioner M. Jayaraman said.

Though the civic body has begun to streamline the waste collection, it is yet to make concrete efforts for the scientific disposal of the wastes. The civic body is dumping the garbage in the Kitchipalayam yard. The officials said that they had already identified a site for establishing a modern compost yard.Efforts were being made to start the construction works on the site.Modern methods would be used to treat the waste scientifically, the officials said.
