Karur: Farmers in the district have welcomed the announcement of Mettur Dam opening for delta irrigation stating that other districts along the banks of Cauvery would also stand to gain marginally.Farmers in Kulithalai and Krishnarayapuram areas of the district say the imminent opening of the Mettur Dam bode well for annual crops in the region. “We welcome the opening of the dam since South Bank Canal and Kattalai High Level Channel branching off Cauvery at Mayanur would be fed well in the days ahead. Perhaps turn system in those channels might come to an end and tail end areas of the channels would receive enough supply,” deputy secretary of Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Welfare Association Kavandampatti R. Subramanian said.Ground water level would go up in the areas adjoining the river and annual crops such as banana, sugar cane and betel vine in the region would stand to gain.
Moreover with Adi festival approaching, the water release would usher in festive times, Convener of the Kulithalai Farmers’ Discussion Group A.V. Gopaladesikan observes. However, farmers here were quick to point out that the release was essentially meant for core delta farmers and it was only by the way they would get water.
