Elcot plans to promote Tier II cities
Full-page advertisements in the latest issues of leading news magazines are an indication of the full-throttled campaign launched by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT), to lure IT investors to the Tier-II cities in the State.
“We have started the campaign after getting in-principle clearance from the government. They have sanctioned around Rs 30 crore under the Centre’s Assistance to States for Infrastructure Development for Exports (ASIDE) funding. The fund will be utilised by Elcot for developing common infrastructure facilities within the IT specific SEZs promoted by it,” C Umashankar, Managing Director of Elcot, told this website's newspaper on Monday.
Apart from Coimbatore, Elcot is promoting Tier II cities such as Hosur, Salem, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Tiruchy as favourite IT destinations.“Lands are coming in our possession in all these cities. We have worked out a strategy to move ahead,” Umashankar said.On the problem of land prices, he said a strategy is being worked out to deal with it.
In Coimbatore, the acquisition of an additional 30 acres, adjacent to the around 27.53 acres at the proposed site on Avinashi Road near the Medical College is expected to be completed soon, he said.Apart from TCS, Wipro and Tidel, more companies have evinced interest in the Coimbatore IT park. But the current layout is only for the three companies and hence, they are looking for more lands, he added.
Quoting an example of land prices in Coimbatore, sources said that if the government price is Re 1, the land price outside is Rs 4. This is proving to be a problem. At present, the focus is on the foundation stone laying for the Coimbatore IT park project by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on February 24.“The basic infrastructure layout for the project is expected to be submitted by the architect in a day or two,” said Nodal Officer for Coimbatore, L Sanislaus.Elcot is expecting the works to be completed in around 15 to 18 months.
