Bandh @ Nagapattinam

Nagapattinam : All the traders in Mayiladuturai in Nagapattinam district have decided to observe a bandh on Sunday called by the Chamber of Commerce to protest against the move of the Delimitation Commission to merge the Mayiladuturai Lok Sabha constituency with the Chidambaram and Thanjavur LS constituencies.Mayiladuturai is the home constituency of Mani Shankar Aiyar, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj and Youth Affairs.

S. Rajakumar, MLA (Congress) of Mayiladuturai constituency, said that he would lead a delegation and represent to the Delimitation Commission at its sitting in Tiruchi on Sunday to drop its move and retain the Mayiladuturai LS constituency as before.He pointed out that the Kollidam river is naturally dividing the Mayiladuturai and Chidambaram parliamentary constituencies and said that the entire Cauvery delta end in Mayiladuturai LS constituency.Out of the six Assembly segments in the Mayiladuturai parliamentary constituency, the commission has proposed to merge three Assembly segments of Mayiladuturai, Sirkazhi and Poompuhar with Chidambaram LS constituency and two Assembly constituencies of Kumbakonam and Tiruvidaimarudur with Thanjavur LS constituency and wind up the Kuttalam Assembly constituency and merge it with Nannilam and Mayiladuturai Assembly segments.
