In an urgent measure to improve air surveillance along the Palk Bay and Palk Strait, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is setting up a radar station at Kodiakarai (Point Calimere) near Nagapattinam. It had established a mobile radar station at Seeniappa Dharga near Mandapam.Highly placed sources told on Monday that a team of IAF personnel from Thiruvananthapuram had reached Kodiakarai with the equipment.
The vehicle-mounted radar had been positioned in a place close to the sea. It would receive signals in a week.Kodiakarai was chosen because of its proximity to Jaffna and Kangesandurai in Sri Lanka.Movements above the sea could be easily tracked down through the new facility at Kodiakarai, he said.
